Volunteers Needed on August 11, 2010 for Levy Ballot Measure

Edmonds School District has a Supplemental School Programs and Operations Levy on the ballot that was sent out to all registered voters in the district on July 26th. The election day (and postmark date for mailed in ballots) is Tuesday, August 17th. The Edmonds Education Association (EEA) is holding a series of phone call nights to spread the word about the levy election. Scripts are provided; it’s simple and a great way to support our school district and our students.

Parents from Terrace Park Elementary are asked to help on August 11th either from 5:00-6:30 p.m. or 6:30-8:00 p.m.  Phone calls occur at the EEA Offices in Lynnwood.  If you are interested and can help with either time slot please email Brett Hagen at bretthgn@hotmail.com to confirm.  A total of 11 people can work each shift.

To learn more about the levy, please visit this page on the Edmonds School District website.

Final CPA Fund Drive of the Year!

We are currently conducting our final fund drive of the 2010-2011 school year. Funds donated to CPA are tax deductible, and may be eligible for employer matching fund donations. Money raised is used throughout the school year to support our students, their families, and the Challenge classrooms to provide support and specialized curriculum options.

If you are on the three-part annual donation plan, or you have not had the opportunity to contribute yet this year, please download a copy of the Spring 2010 Fund Drive form and send it in with your contribution by May 21st. If you have made your full contribution for this school year, we thank you for your generous support!

Please Contact Our U.S. Senators Regarding Federal Funding for Gifted Education

The U.S. Congress is preparing to vote on funding for the Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act for the next fiscal year. This act has provided crucial funding to gifted education programs and research into best practices nationwide. Since 2003, the funding for these grants has been reduced, adversely impacting programs and organizations in their ability to serve talented and gifted students. A substantial portion of the funding for this act is dedicated to improving methods for identifying disadvantaged gifted and talented youth and getting them into programs that help them to fulfill their academic potentials.

Currently, none of Washington state’s federal representatives are signers on what are known as the “Dear Colleague” letters. House and Senate versions of “Dear Colleague” letters are distributed to members of each legislative body emphasizing the importance of funding the Javits Act at the pre-2003 level, and are signed by House or Senate members who support this position.

The House has completed and distributed its letter, however there is still time for Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray from Washington state to add their signatures to the Senate’s “Dear Colleague” letter. Please contact both senators and urge them to add their names to the supporters of strong and effective funding for Javits Act grants in 2011.

The deadline for adding signatures is April 13. Congress is currently on its Easter break, so most legislators should be back in their home districts right now.
