SENGinar – “Existential Depression in Gifted Children and Adults ”

“Existential Depression in Gifted Children and Adults ”

presented by James T. Webb, Ph.D.

Gifted children and adults are prone to existential depression because of their intensity, sensitivity, and idealism, and because they can see the inconsistencies in the values and behaviors of others around them. In their search for meaning, gifted children are likely to question traditions, particularly those that seem meaningless or unfair- but this prompts others to withdraw from or reject them. As a result, gifted children feel alone in an absurd, arbitrary, and meaningless world where they also feel powerless to change that world.

This workshop describes processes that lead to existential depression, relates these to Dabrowski’s theory of Positive Disintegration, as well as to other psychological theories, and offers some specific ways to ameliorate existential depression.

“I’m not old enough for college,

but I’m READY to learn!”

Preparing children with the

social-emotional skills for success.

Want to make sure your kid will do well when they head to the university? Whether your child is in preschool or in high school, find out how to help your child develop the social and emotional skills that will equip them for success in the college world.

This SENGinar will examine the development of social and emotional behaviors that, in an academic setting, will help equip a student with the necessary social skills to thrive in a college environment. Though our gifted children often possess great intellect and may have never experienced academic hardship, it can be difficult to transition to a new environment where social skills can be the key to higher achievement.

What Your Kids Want You to Know:

Perspectives for Parents and Teachers

This SENGinar is a “must” for teachers and parents who have wondered what the kids in their life might wish they knew. These unique and valuable insights are the result of two requests made to fifth grade gifted students at the end of their school year: one, to list five things that are important for parents of highly able kids to know and two, to tell teachers what they each need to be successful in the classroom.

These exceptionally bright kids were able to put into words what so many find difficult to share. While surveys took place in the classroom, their responses carry beyond the school setting to the social/emotional foundations that allow students to be successful at home and at school. The thoughts they reveal offer a way to begin looking at their perspectives in the complex world in which they live and learn, and how we may help them better navigate the ups and downs of daily life.

Articulate, often heartening, and sometimes surprising, what these students had to say is something that every parent and teacher can use. A look at available resources for further discussion will also be included in this SENGinar. Sign Up Now
