Executive functions are mental skills that help the brain organize and act on information. These skills enable people to plan, organize, remember things, prioritize, pay attention, get started and stay focused on tasks. They also help people use information and experiences from the past to solve current problems.

Children with challenges in executive function may have difficulty with many school tasks, and it may worsen as they get older and have more responsibilities.

Learn more about executive function, how these skills impact school success, and hear some practical strategies for developing and practicing these skills.

Julie George has a BA in Special Education and a Masters in Elementary Education. She taught elementary and middle school for 9 years before joining the staff at the UW Autism Center. She is currently in private practice as a Behavior and Education Consultant, working with students, families, and schools to build strategies to help students succeed in different environments.
