CPA Board Meeting Minutes – 2/03/2011

CPA Board Meeting – 6:30 p.m., February 3rd, 2011 Tina Marohn’s house

In attendance: Ginger Everhart, Sue Wilson-Schmitz, Pam Gaspers, Tina Marohn, Ann Radcliff

Potential new Board members:

Ginger and Sue are meeting Tina Raghu and Kate Selby-Martin on Monday to discuss Co-President positions.  Lisa Flynn is interested in the Co-VP position and Maya Shinn is considering the Treasurer position. Ann Radcliff will be taking on a new role within CPA that oversees the Challenge Spot website, Mail Chimp emails and our gmail account communications.

CPA in the community:

Ginger will represent CPA at the February 8th Potential Challenge Parents meeting for families whose children have been accepted into Challenge for next year.

CPA is seeking parent volunteers to help represent our program at Edmonds School District meetings. Pam will bring a sign up sheet at our Gifted Education Day event.

Parent groups: There is a movement to create more interest in parent group support between schools in order to share ideas and network. Sue is attending a meeting on the 16th of February and would like to have the new proposed board members attend.

Mary Freitas will be meeting on February 23rd with Sue, Ginger and Kevin Allen to talk about expanding CPA to middle school. Need to check in with Tracy on money issues with expansion. Looking at CPA to support the whole program. Bylaws would need to be rewritten and get approval from 1st – 6th grade parents.

March 3rd CPA General Meeting: *

Proposal to invite gifted education advocacy leaders for discussion of what’s going on throughout the state and country:

Marcia Holland: NWGCA

Barbara Poyneer: Coalition for Gifted Ed

Stephen Martin: WAETAG

Nancy Robinson: UW Robinson Center

Pauline Bowie: SENG

*Sue to send out invitation to all these speakers.

Treasurer report (Ginger on behalf of Tracy):

Teacher release day – in lieu of paying for professional development speaker, Mary asked for us to pay for subs for a release day on Feb. 8th.

Timing on next fund drive for Feb. 23rd Wednesday. Ask Tracy if she has time to make a draft up for the next fund drive. Also include in it that whatever parents can contribute is great. We will give them the options of making monthly donations or paying in a lump sum.

CPA support baskets with supplies – The idea to help support classroom supplies by CPA was proposed. In lieu of this being just a CPA support item, CPA will talk with PTA to see if we can do this school wide.

Envelopes – we need to replace PTA envelopes. Need to have some CPA envelopes made with our CPA stamp- Ginger to check into this.

Presidents reports (Ginger & Sue):

Meetings:

Mary Freitas – met with her for the monthly meeting and discussed expansion of CPA.

Dr. Tony Byrd and Nancy Gilbertson – discussed work toward expanding CPA or High Cap Parent group at Brier Terrace Middle school. Also discussed potential impacts of cuts or elimination of state funding for hi-cap programs in Edmonds. Dr. Tony Byrd is joining us for GED.

Task Force – IB speakers and discussion on how to make the middle school transition into IB a more seamless process.

SENG Board Reception. SENG is hosting a conference here in Seattle this summer and they invited key parent group leaders to help out. They will be holding a silent auction and are requesting donations. <Sue to send Tina stuff for website to look for donations and information on the conference.> They are also training new SENG facilitators for discussion groups. SENG would like to make this educational opportunity and annual event.

Classroom reps:

PTA did not get enough responses from interested parents for the neighborhood school classes, so PTA didn’t pursue it. At this point in the year, it doesn’t make sense to implement the position for CPA either. Challenge faculty have historically recruited and identified parents to fulfill the parent rep position at the beginning of each year. Perhaps next year’s CPA board can look into having those reps attend CPA board meeting and act as liaisons for event planning (e.g. Gifted Education Day).
