Mary Freitas highlighted the 2009 Washington Achievement award the Challenge Program teachers recently received. She also thanked the CPA Board for hosting a celebratory dinner on their behalf.

At the State Level – Legislators are setting up a work group to create benchmarks for highly capable students. This will include a panel of national gifted experts to look at programs and services, administration, reporting requirements, certification, professional development and more. They are seeking input from representatives at the district level as well.

Terrace Park is planning on hiring a new Challenge teacher for next year. The program is growing and they are looking to add a teacher at the intermediate grade level.

The school hours are also going to change for next year with a start time of 9:00 a.m. and end time of 3:30 p.m.

Treasurer’s report – Tracy Hannuksela

Spring fund drive total so far is $680. Our total raised so far is $9,300 and we are hoping to make our goal of $10,000 by the end of this school year.

Tracy has asked teachers to submit their grant requests by this Friday.

Money allocated toward the summer BBQ will be adjusted in the budget.

Matching fund issue: Boeing will only match funds for the primary parent organization at the school and will not directly match funds for CPA. We do not know if we will have this issue with other organizations as we have not received any other match requests.

President update – Ginger Everhart

District & legislative update – gifted education is essentially the same for next year. Gifted Ed will be listed under the definition of basic education effective the beginning of the 2011-2013 state budget biennium.

Awards and recognitions: The Challenge teachers received the award from Washington State and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. CPA funds recently covered a nice dinner and celebration for the teachers. Thanks you Challenge teachers!

Congratulations to Alec Sjoholm for winning the Washington State Geographic Bee. PTA and CPA are sharing the costs related to the trip to Washington DC in which Alec will represent our school in the National Geographic Bee.
